The mechanism

PQQ is a redox cofactor found in trace amounts in certain foods. In preclinical research, it has been shown to stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis (the creation of new mitochondria) through activation of the PGC-1alpha pathway, and animal studies show it improves mitochondrial efficiency at low physiological doses. Researchers have proposed PQQ as a candidate “longevity vitamin” based on this mechanism, though – as with ergothioneine – this classification remains debated rather than settled.

What human evidence exists

Small human studies on PQQ have reported improvements in measures of cognitive function, including processing speed and memory performance, along with evidence from imaging studies that PQQ can increase ATP levels in neural tissue within 24 hours of dosing. These are genuinely interesting findings – but the human trial base is limited to a small number of small studies, not the large, independently replicated trial base that exists for well-studied ingredients like creatine or omega-3s.

How this compares to urolithin A

Both PQQ and urolithin A target mitochondrial health, but the maturity of their human evidence bases is meaningfully different. Urolithin A has multiple placebo-controlled randomized trials, including 4-month studies with functional outcomes like measured strength and endurance gains. PQQ’s human evidence is earlier-stage: fewer trials, smaller sample sizes, and shorter durations.
